Cardinals Giants Game Recap

Cardinals 25, Giants 14: Ted Ginn Jr. unleashed a 71-yard punt return for a touchdown with 10:10 remaining as Arizona scored four times in the fourth quarter to spoil New York's home opener.

With Carson Palmer (shoulder) watching from the sideline, Drew Stanton was 14-of-29 for 167 yards without a turnover for the Cardinals (2-0), who scored in the fourth on Ginn's return and three field goals by Chandler Catanzaro. Andre Ellington contributed 91 yards on 15 carries while Jonathan Dwyer added a rushing score for Arizona.

Eli Manning threw two touchdowns as New York (0-2) rallied from an early 10-0 deficit to take a second-half lead, but the Giants were doomed throughout the afternoon by penalties (nine for 70 yards), turnovers (two fumbles and two interceptions) and drops (five in the fourth quarter alone). Manning finished 26-of-39 for 277 yards with two TDs and two interceptions, while Rashard Jennings pitched in 64 rushing yards on 18 attempts.

The Cardinals took the game's opening possession and drove 80 yards, the final one coming from Dwyer to create an early 7-0 lead. The Giants' offense did not get on the board until 37 seconds remained in the half, as Manning's 7-yard TD pass to Rueben Randle made it 10-7 at intermission.

Manning's 1-yard TD pass to Daniel Fells put New York ahead late in the third quarter, but Arizona answered early in the fourth on Catanzaro's 37-yard field goal and, after a three-and-out, Ginn's fourth career punt return for a score. The Cardinals failed on the ensuing two-point conversion, keeping it a one-possession game, and the hosts drove deep into Cardinals territory before Jennings' fumble and Catanzaro's fourth field goal sealed the defeat.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Stanton had not appeared in a regular-season game since 2010. ... Randle's touchdown was an impressive one-handed catch in the corner of the end zone. He finished with four catches for 39 yards, while the Giants were led by Larry Donnell's seven grabs for 81 yards.... Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald, who had only one catch in a Week 1 victory over San Diego, bounced back with six receptions for 51 yards.

Preview: Arizona Cardinals at New York Giants

The New York Giants lost their first six games in 2013 and were never able to dig themselves out of that hole. This season, the Giants got off to an ugly start with a Week 1 blowout loss, and they'll try to right the ship Sunday against the visiting Arizona Cardinals. New York struggled on the ground and through the air on offense on Monday and wasn't any better on defense, getting outgained 417-197 in a 35-14 loss at Detroit.

"No excuses. We played very poorly," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. "We don't have a lot to be proud of here. Couldn't move the ball, couldn't stop them, turned the ball over, got into that business again. Got a punt blocked, so you name it. It was a nightmare performance." The Cardinals are facing a short week after posting an 18-17 victory over San Diego on Monday night thanks to two fourth-quarter touchdown passes from Carson Palmer. "I liked the way we weathered it as a football team and how we played in the fourth quarter," coach Bruce Arians said. "The one thing I was looking for on the sideline was somebody that was in disbelief. I couldn't find one. I couldn't look in anybody's eyes that didn't think we were going to win that game in the fourth quarter and that was a very good feeling as a coach."

ABOUT THE CARDINALS (1-0): Palmer threw for 304 yards in the opener - 119 of which went to Michael Floyd - and the Cardinals' quarterback found 11 different receivers, including 10 who made at least one grab for a first down. Second-year running back Andre Ellington played about half of Arizona's snaps in Week 1 and contributed 53 yards on 13 carries despite a foot injury that he believes won't get better until the team's bye week. On a more serious note, veteran defensive end John Abraham suffered another concussion in Week 1 and could decide to retire.

ABOUT THE GIANTS (0-1): Eli Manning threw for just 163 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions on 18-of-33 passing in Week 1, but Rashad Jennings didn't provide much support with 46 yards on 16 carries and Victor Cruz also had a quiet game with two catches for 24 yards. The biggest concern for the Giants could be their defense, which gave up 10-of-15 third-down conversions against the Lions and might struggle with Larry Fitzgerald after Detroit star Calvin Johnson torched New York for 164 yards and two scores. Two key members of the Giants' secondary - cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and safety Antrel Rolle - began their careers with the Cardinals and will be challenged by Arizona's talented wide receiving corps.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Arizona, which has won eight of its last 10 games, only allowed 52 rushing yards in Week 1 - the second-lowest total in the NFL.

2. After Sunday's game, the Giants' next three contests are against teams that went a combined 9-39 in 2013.

3. Fitzgerald had only one reception for 22 yards in the Cardinals' opener - his 150th consecutive game with a catch (the longest active streak in the NFL).
