South Florida 71, Hofstra 70

Tuesday, November 25, 2014

A pair of one-loss teams clashed in a see-saw affair at the Sun Dome in Tampa, Fla., on Tuesday night, but South Florida edged Hofstra 71-70.

Forward Chris Perry scored only eight points on the night, but his layup on an assist from guard Anthony Collins with 7.8 seconds to play proved to be the game-winner.

Before Tuesday, the only loss for each team came against North Carolina State.

Hofstra, which led by as many as 15 points in the second half, squandered the advantage down the stretch.

South Florida's Corey Allen Jr. led the Bulls with 18 points and had a hand in nearly every play during the comeback. With South Florida down by eight, Allen scored 11 of the next 16 points for the Bulls, who tied the game with a minute to play, setting up Perry's big shot.

Guard Nehemias Morillo helped in the comeback effort for the Bulls (4-1) with 15 points and six rebounds. South Florida guard Bo Zeigler added 12 points, while Collins chipped in eight points and a game-high 12 assists.

Guard Ameen Tanksley led all scorers with 20 points and added five rebounds for the Pride (3-2).

Hofstra guard Juan'ya Green followed up his 24-point outing in the last game against Wagner with 17 points Tuesday, going 13-for-17 from the foul line. He sank two free throws with less than a minute to play to give Hofstra a 70-69 lead.

Guard Brian Bernardi finished with 14 points for the Pride, who also got 10 points from guard Dion Nesmith.

Hofstra stays on the road for its next game at Jackson State on Friday. South Florida returns to action Saturday when it hosts to Jacksonville.
